My kid is a binky baby and I don’t care

We are coming around on 17 months in this household and Cora’s two favorite things are her blankets and binkies.  Every time she falls, gets sleepy, needs a cuddle or really any moment, she needs one but prefers both.  Thankfully she isn’t attached to a specific blanket or binky but does love them all.

I wanted my child to be a binky baby.  I seriously hoped that she would not be one to hate them because I wanted the mute button, I won’t lie.  My second reason was because I was a thumb sucker. As in, I was probably 13 before I quit and my Mom tried everything to get me to quit but ultimately, you can’t take that away. A binky you can.  To my happiness Cora took to that binky the day she was born and hasn’t turned back.

I remember around the 9 month pediatrician visit, the doc was discussing getting rid of the bottle and I asked her about her thoughts on the binky.  She told us they don’t get too fussed about getting rid of the addiction till around 2.  She fully believes it helps them and parents get through the teething phase and lord knows the teething phase in our household is anything but fun.  She had a much greater concern over getting rid of the bottle by 12 months which we successfully mastered.

From there, I honestly haven’t given it a ton of thought, my girl and her addiction.  She will play without one during the day and knows they aren’t allowed at the high chair.  She does know where the binky bowl is and is magical at pulling one out of thin air.  Sometimes she likes to chew on two at once. (Teeth!)  At times, when she pops one in her mouth, she has the same look on her face that I do when I take the first sip of wine after a long day.  She certainly requires one for naps, car rides, bedtime and some soothing in between. I’m careful to keep them boiled, replaced when need be, and age/size appropriate.

I have started to have a few comments from people regarding her little attachment.  Perhaps she likes it a bit too much, perhaps we should start getting rid of it now….everyone has an opinion, horror story, advice or made up knowledge on the topic.  Then I realized I am starting to let go of a lot of this “society baby requirement” shit more than ever.  While I thought we were fairly good about letting a lot of it roll off our backs, there are some things I wasn’t as good about.  I’m currently giving zero fucks about her binky situation.  I’m not going to research it, I’m not going to worry about it…nothing.  I’m going to pop one in her mouth tonight if she screams at me, that’s what I’m going to do.

Do I want my kid to be the 3 year old talking around a binky? No.  But the girl isn’t even two yet so can the lady in the grocery store cool her shit just a notch? Just trying to keep her from burning down the house can be exhausting enough!  I figured we will start a 12 step program with her over the summer with a goal of it to be almost gone or gone by the time she turns 2 in October.

Goals I tell you.

What are your binky stories?

You go momma!! Whatever makes your life easier.

Little Nugget used a pacifier, but wasn’t super attached to it. He stopped using it at 5 months old because we forgot it at home. We never reintroduced it to him.

With Z, she was fine without it until she got roseola. After that, she NEEDED it to go to sleep. We recently took it away. I was worried about how she’d react, but was pleasantly surprised when she only cried one night. She’s fine without it now.

My husband and I are not pacifier lovers, so the least amount of time our kids can use them, the better. =)

My nephew did the same thing that little Nugget did. Just disregarded it early on and went on with life. Kids are so funny making choices on their own like that! I wish she would do that but I just don’t think it will happen. Oh well!

Motherhood has definitely helped me learn to choose my battles. I used to fight every single battle…not anymore. I’m smarter now. Haha.

Good for you! I think the older they get the wiser we get about those things:)

I have the wise mothers around me to thank for that…you’re one of them. 😉

We are a soother family too!! The second we were told by a pediatrician in the USA that they help reduce SIDS, we went and bought one! And thankfully Little MPB took to it. 🙂
And, we have no intentions of getting rid of it yet. He really only uses it when he’s upset, going to sleep or in the car. All of which we are completely okay with. But he is just like Cora, it’s like he can pull them out of the air! We have no idea where he finds them, but he manages to more often then I’d like to county.
I’ll admit something that has greatly annoyed me is when people randomly take it out of his mouth. Both sets of grandparents have done this and so have a few friends. It’s a HUGE petpeeve for us – we are his parents and if we’ve decided he gets one then he gets one!

Sounds like they are a lot alike with their binkys! Crazy! She has figured out to hide them in her coat pockets and other places but man she is good at it:) And oh my goodness I am with you on on people taking it away. I don’t get that! Huge pet peeve here as well! My pediatrician also mentioned the SIDS thing to us.

We are a soother household too. Second night in the hospital I popped one into his wailing little mouth and it calmed him right away. I actually felt a lot of guilt for letting him use one so early on but realized that my guilt was based on what society dictates, not necessarily what I want. I called my husband, who I had sent home to sleep, and he calmed my worries and said to just give him the soother. Since then the soother has been fondly named “the plug” lol. We used to let him have one whenever he wanted it but now he’s restricted to bedtime and in the car seat and occasionally the stroller. He randomly finds them, or pulls them out of his crib and pops them in his mouth while playing and we usually will let him have a few sucks on it and then take it away and put it up high. If he’s happy he doesn’t need to be using it. If he’s super super upset then we will let him have one but will take it away once he’s calmed down. But he’s beginning to know that when I say “it’s time to put your soothers into the crib” he actually goes and puts them back and leaves them. We have had family members mention that maybe he shouldn’t be using them too but I just tell them that we have a plan in mind to let him keep using it until he’s 2 and then we will figure it out from there. Still needing to drop the one bottle he has a day though 😦

Thankfully when I had her the hospital was totally fine with it. I think because I wasn’t breast feeding and there was no need for nipple confusion, they didn’t mind or say anything. I will say, around here, I know more people who use them than don’t. It sounds like Hunter is better about his use than Cora. I will ask her for it and she runs and hides it. Probably how she produces them out of thin air later:) I figure with the summer and being outside so much that will help us slowly transition down to sleep time for use and then go from there. She was always much more fond of the binky than bottle though:)

I can just imagine Cora and Hunter having a battle for the soothers. If we let him have his soother all day long he totally would. Sometimes when I take them away he freaks out about it. Or if he sees them sitting on the kitchen counter and I say he doesn’t need it he will fling himself on the floor, sobbing because mean mommy won’t give the formerly happy baby his soother. Maybe it’s a ploy to get me to give him the soother because he’s “sad”.

My son has a dummy (Aussie term for binky) and we love it. He definitely gets a calm look on his face when he gets it. He is only 3 months but people have already started to ask me about getting rid of it :-/ or comments like “you know you will have to get rid of that”. I am a formula feeding mum to and I am already sick if the questions…same as my c-section. I have complete strangers or acquaintances asking why I don’t breastfeed or why I had a section. I used to explain, now I just say “private medical reasons” and leave it.

My friend’s daughter had one until 3 and after her 3rd birthday they packaged them up and the Dummy fairy came and took them away to give to all the new babies and left her a frozen themed water bottle. Worked a treat.

I have friends that use a “dummy” as well:) Well we are horrible dummy and formula feeding moms together then:) Just kidding. I don’t get some peoples hatred towards one. I get the same “you’ll have to get rid of it” comments to which I say I would rather have 2 years of a mute button followed by 2 weeks of tantrums to get rid of it than nothing at all! I have heard use of the dummy fairy as well. Another friends told her little girl that her dog at them all and that seemed to work well. Another at Christmas time was leaving them for Santa so he would bring big girl toys. Endless options:)

I am.a formula feeding, dummy using, c-section mum who is doing purees instead of baby led weaning *gasps of horror*. Funny how worked up people get over these tiny things in infancy, when all that matters is that kids are loved and safe.

You are funny! I fed my kid straight from jar food:) We are slowly ruining them. I’m pretty sure they don’t ask about these details on their college applications so we should be safe!

Binky and Blankie family here. My kids are 11 and 14 and I’m happy to say, are not still using them. 🙂 But I wouldn’t judge them if they needed a blankie to get to sleep now and then. How is it different than a teddy bear? As far as taking the binky’s away, it took a few nights, but we all survived (I think it was probably harder on us than them). You do what is best for your family. Women in the grocery store need to learn to mind their own business.

Love it! As I always say, I’m sure she won’t go to college with a binky. No one else has. I would rather have a few nights of crazy getting rid of the darn thing for the two years or so of peace it will give me:)

One of my friends daughters was so attached to her binky. They could not get rid of it to save their lives. When they were in Disney last year they threw out her binkys when she wasn’t looking. They told her that Cinderella has the binkys and that was good enough for her. Whenever she asked where it was they said with Cinderella and that put a huge smile on her face “Oh yeah!”

That is so hilarious! Whatever works by that point!

Have a good way to do it – a friend that was trying to get their son off it – she had me take it one day when they were leaving – and to this day that boy gives me that look! He’s 15 years old and I think he’s still mad at me!

Oh I love it! So stinkin funny!

I think every parent has their thing with their kid that we just dgaf. I tried to get E to get rid of bottles at 12m and kid was NOT having it. So I let it go, and didn’t try to get rid of them again until he was 15 months and he didn’t even bat an eye. They’re ready when they’re ready…. E still has his monkey binky but it always stays in the crib. and he only uses it at night or for naps.

    1. Sanibel Avatar

Amen to that. They aren’t taking them to college and will give them up when they are ready. Why fight it!?
